Family Travel Destinations – How to Choose the Best One for your Family

I’m a firm believer that any destination can be one of the best family travel destinations. Wherever we go, our kids come too.

However, it has to be said that some destinations can be more family friendly than others in terms of things to do and ease of getting around with a hoard of kids in tow.

If your kids are of varying ages it can be particularly tricky to find a vacation spot that ticks everyone’s idea of fun. However, there are plenty of prime destinations that are both interesting and accommodating for both the older and younger members of your family.

Things to consider when choosing your next family vacation include what type of activities the destinations offer, whether they boast family-friendly accommodation, and what the culture is like.

In this article, we’ll explore the current top picks for family travel destinations and examine how each of them could have the potential to cater to each of your family members needs.

Bali, Indonesia

If you’re seeking a family travel destination that’ll allow your kids the chance to explore a vastly different culture, Bali, Indonesia is amongst the most family-friendly holiday destinations found in Southeast Asia.

With plenty of family-orientated resorts to be found in Legian and Kuta and a plethora of sizable villas found in the Seminyak district, Bali is certainly well prepared on the family travel destination accommodation-front.

These districts are only a short walk away from some idyllic beaches, close to where you’ll be able to watch dolphins frolicking offshore, and are also within the locality of Ubud’s forests, where visitors can see a variety of different monkey species in their natural habitat.

With incredible scenery, beautiful beaches, delicious food, friendly locals and even some wildlife to find, it’s safe to say that Bali is a great option for most families.

Athens, Greece

If you’ve got kids with wild imaginations, making the pilgrimage to the mythical city of Athens could be the best family travel destination for you.

The mythology that enshrouds a lot of Athens’ key landmarks will certainly keep your kids entertained throughout a long day of sightseeing, while also offering them a highly educational experience.

The ancient Greek monuments will certainly keep history buffs occupied too, with an overwhelming amount of iconic structures to be found throughout the city.

Plus, with lines of eateries waiting to cater to tourists and several gorgeous beaches close at hand, Athens is certainly a prime family travel destination.

Greece relies heavily on tourism, so you can rest assured that there are several ideal accommodations to be found in Athens. And if you have a bit of extra time, why not spend a few days sinking your feet into the sand on the Greek islands too.

Rome, Italy

Another one for the history buffs, with the Colosseum, Pantheon, and St. Peter’s Basilica all close at hand.

Rome could also be an ideal place for the younger history aficionados, as Roman history is found in school curriculums, so the sights of Rome may also be familiar to them (why not help the school work along while we’re at it!).

Rome is a great family travel destination if your family loves food, with unique Roman-style pizza and other Italian goodies found on most streets. Do not walk away without buying the kids gelato (Italian ice cream) – the flavor choices are a sight to behold!

Puntarenas, Costa Rica

The canton of Puntarenas, Costa Rica, may not seem like the most obvious family travel destination, however, if your family want to experience an exciting adventure, and to witness some sky forests before they disappear forever, look no further than Puntarenas.

Within Puntarenas, there is a famed area called Monteverde, which boasts some of the best hiking, climbing, and extreme adventure touristic attractions in the world.

You can explore the entire canopy of a forest from the comfort of a zip line, or safely explore through the dense jungles on foot, the choice is yours!

There are numerous lodges and hotels dotted throughout the forest, so, if you like adventure, and if your family likes the sound of getting off the beaten track in Costa Rica, Puntarenas is the option for you.

Tokyo, Japan

Perhaps your kids are too old to be entertained by adventure parks, and perhaps too young to properly enjoy a historical monument.

The ancient city of Tokyo strikes the right balance between tradition and modernity, and is the ideal family destination for those who want to experience traditional Japanese culture, but also stand in awe at the futuristic buildings that make up the city’s skyline.

There are, of course, numerous hotels to choose from in Tokyo, some boasting the most ingenious architecture and layout designs.

Tokyo is also famed for its shopping districts, and, for a fun day out, head to Toyko Disneyland, Legoland or the Science Museum.

Cape Town, South Africa

Majorca, Spain

If it’s not broken, why fix it?

Majorca has long been a popular family destination and is still a great place to go for families who are simply looking to unwind for a week or two.

Majorca is where you’ll find a wide range of family-orientated hotels, many with a focus on family entertainment and kids clubs, which are sure to keep your younger ones occupied.

With a relaxed vibe, Majorca is a good option for your young child’s first-ever holiday experience, and I doubt many adults can honestly complain about lounging poolside in the Mediterranean heat.

In conclusion…

No matter where you end up, to experience a different culture is often sufficient in making your next family holiday one remember.

When deciding where next to go, be sure to pick a family travel destination that you’ve never been to before, as there’s no better feeling than exploring and falling in love with a new place alongside your loved ones. Enjoy the adventure!
